The castle, built on the south bank of the Clyde in red sandstone, had a great tower, or donjon, over 20m (66ft) in diameter and at least 24.5m (80ft) high, with walls about 4.5m (15ft) thick. Although damaged, much of the donjon survives but the original castle was never finished. Foundations have been discovered of parts of a planned curtain wall, twin-towered gatehouse and other towers laid out to form a quadrilateral enclosure. Wide ditches also indicate that a large area was due to be fortified.
